Fame and Fortune

You took me to a mountain top
To show me earth's span.
You said I'd be adored
By every woman, every man.
You said I could party
Until the night was through
So long as I gave up my soul
And only worshipped you!

You said I could have riches
A manager and new friends,
Massive houses, loads of diamonds
Lots of Mercedes-Benz.
You said I could have anything
This world could offer me,
I could be my own person
Independent, cool and free.

So I gave up all my old friends,
Got new ones - just like me
Rich, with massive houses,
Footloose and fancy free.
I thought I had the world's attention
I began to worship fame
My attitude was changing
I got a brand new name.

I partied through the darkness,
I thought that I felt whole,
But the dark was not outside me,
It filled up all my soul.
I thought I had my life together,
I was on a fairground ride -
But it was so far from the truth
I was dying from inside.

I spent all of my money
On cars and lots of jewels
I declared myself bankrupt
Because I played the fool.
My new friends, they disowned me
Because my cash was spent,
Nothing, now belonged to me
I couldn't afford my rent.

The only friends I have now
Are my needle and my bong.
You told me I would rule the world,
But everything's gone wrong.
I've lost all my old friends,
My new ones have gone too,
Because I was so greedy
And I'd listened to you.
